How is your credit rating? If it's really good, go for one without a loan. If it still needs some work, get a loan you can easily pay off.

If yours is paid off try and save up what you'd usually put into the payments and in a year or so get something awesome. That's basically what I'm doing now.

that civic looks good but a bit on the high side. You should enjoy a couple of payment free months

Similarly, I would say give yourself six months or a year without a car payment, and see how it feels. When I paid off the SHO it felt great!

not great not bad. the wife and I are thinking about getting a credit car for a new couch and TV, and maybe an Xbox One. I've never had a credit car. because I don't trust myself with one so this would be a one time deal, find a good sign up deal, buy a few things pay them off and cut the card.

That would be the smart thing to do.

As long as you're careful, a credit card is a good way to go about it. Just use it for small stuff, like buying groceries and gas. Smaller amounts are easier to pay off. Also, make sure to actually have the funds to pay it off.

I'm doing it so I can get a newish low mile car and keep it for a long time. Plus something more reliable than My Fix it Again Tony.

I love Bimmers but neither of those are a good buy, mileage and practicality wise respecitvely. The EP3 is a great car and would be reliable but I'd be a bit weary of that one with the damage it's suffered; as it is, the price is too high by $1-2K. That Suzuki is neat and looks to be in good shape but the value is a bit high here as well, being orphaned from its brand really hurts resale.

That said, why the need to get a new car as soon as you current one is paid off? Save that payment you're no longer making for a few months at least and enjoy the car you have.

keep paying your car payment into a savings account for a year and then start looking a year from now. With any luck you'll have several grand saved up that could be the difference between good choices and great choices.

but a year from now all the cars I want will be a year older.

and therefore less expensive, and you'll have a few grand in your pocket to make the transaction go easier.

If owning the car outright means so little to you (as evidenced by the fact that you want a new one immediately after paying this one off), why don't you just lease?

Kinja'd!!! Biased Plies > HFV has no HFV. But somehow has 2 motorcycles
02/21/2015 at 14:13

That may be so but be financially smart about it if there is nothing physically wrong with the car you have. A few months of a saved car payment will probably be a useful rainy day fund or down payment for something else down the line.

because I don't want a new car. I like older cars. The cars listed above are the newest things I want I own. Modern cars just don't interest me, mostly because traction control tends to make me angry. Especially in the winter months. If a computer is going to tell me how to drive, then whats the point of even giving me a steering wheel and pedals.

I can see that, I like older, smaller cars myself. It seems like you should wait a little bit before buying a new one though, or at least don't take out another loan.

I'll probably wait till summer sell, my car private party then buy something. In the summer I don't "need" a car so being car-less for a few weeks, or even months wouldn't be a big deal. Then I wouldn't be stuck trading-in, or buying at a stealership. I just got all excited when I found that blue Si. It's the car I should have bought 18 month ago when I bought my Civic.

Is your car clapped out and about to die? If not, hang on to it and enjoy some time without payments. I waffled in and out of debt for years playing with cars and motorcycles and stuff. I'm going to have my car paid off before the end of the year, and while the temptation is always there to look for something newer, I'd rather put the car payments towards my credit card payments so I can get that paid off too.

And... You've been making payments for a while now, so you've probably got a budget worked out that assumed $xxx.xx each month is going to the car payment. So put that money in a savings account or something and in 6 months to a year you will have enough to move up a newer Civic SI, or lower mileage BMW.

Yeah really IMO if you did get one try to find a simple stage 2 car with exhaust and a tune. This is actually better than a stock car because the tuning is so poor it can prematurely demolish the engine. I've had a couple sti's and have yet to run into any reliability issues. I think the new cars and after gd body are more prone to problems. I do have to say I beat my old stage 2 sti pretty good everyday and did 2 track days sat/sun where I did 2 run groups and let my car be used. I was literally struggling to get out of it for my other driver to get in and make his group in time. The car was perfect up to about 47k when an accident totaled her. There was a question of repair at the time and i had compression test which passed w flying colors. Unfortunately the rest of the car was fooked.
